Bunch weight, fruit size, uniformity, appearance, taste, firmness and shelf life all influence returns. Because potassium has a central role in water regulation, enzyme activity and carbohydrate movement, we see efficient potassium nutrition as an important part of a balanced banana programme. Our liquid potassium range gives growers more than one route to potassium management.

Why Potassium is Important for Banana

Banana produces substantial biomass before it develops its bunch, so potassium is required across the crop cycle and becomes especially important as the plant approaches flowering and fruit development.

In our banana nutrition programmes, we consider potassium important for water regulation, enzyme activation, carbohydrate formation and movement, photosynthetic activity, plant strength, fruit development and the plant’s response to environmental stress.

Water regulation within plant tissues

Enzyme activation

Carbohydrate formation and movement

Photosynthetic activity

Plant strength and physiological balance

Fruit development and quality

Support during environmental stress

Adequate and available potassium helps the banana plant use water and other nutrients more efficiently while supporting the physiological processes involved in bunch and fruit development. ICAR research on banana also reinforces the importance of scientifically managing crop nutrition and nutrient-use efficiency.

Potassium and Banana Bunch Size

For us, bunch weight is one of the clearest indicators of banana productivity, but bunch size is influenced by several factors, including variety, plant population, irrigation, crop load, soil fertility, weather and overall nutrient management.

Potassium contributes to the movement and utilisation of carbohydrates and water within the plant. This makes adequate potassium availability particularly relevant during reproductive growth, when the plant is supporting bunch formation and fruit development.

ICAR research on ‘Robusta’ banana has demonstrated the value of nitrogen and potassium management after fruit set, with improved fruit and bunch weight reported compared with control treatments. We therefore view potassium as part of a complete nutrition programme rather than a standalone solution.

Narmada NewTrient Potassium Carbonate 29.9%

It provides 46.5% w/v potassium to the crop and can be incorporated through foliar spray and fertigation.

For foliar application, our recommended dose is 3 ml per litre of water. Through drip or fertigation, the recommended dose is 2 litres per acre. We can repeat the application 2–3 times during the crop cycle, based on the crop stage and the farm nutrient-management programme.

The period after bunch formation is especially important. At this stage, our Potassium Carbonate 29.9% can be incorporated into the programme for bunch feeding and, where recommended, direct spray on the bunch. This gives growers a practical way to keep potassium availability aligned with the crop’s developing fruit load.

We recommend using these doses and application methods as part of a planned programme rather than increasing application simply to increase potassium. Soil conditions, crop nutrition, irrigation and the overall fertiliser schedule should always be considered together.

Potassium Thiosulphate: A Fertigation-Focused Option

We also use Potassium Thiosulphate (K₂S₂O₃) where both potassium and sulphur are required. Our product information specifies 25% water-soluble potassium, expressed as K₂O, along with 17% sulphur.

Potassium Thiosulphate can support a balanced potassium-and-sulphur programme for banana. Importantly, we do not recommend it for foliar spray. Its use should be through fertigation, following the recommended application programme.

We position Potassium Thiosulphate as a complementary option rather than as a substitute for every other potassium source. The right choice depends on nutrient status, crop stage, irrigation system and the broader farm programme.

Potassium and Fruit Quality

Banana quality extends well beyond bunch size. Buyers and consumers also look at fruit size, uniformity, colour, peel appearance, pulp characteristics, sweetness and overall market appeal.

Potassium is associated with carbohydrate metabolism and the movement of assimilates towards developing fruits. By maintaining adequate potassium availability, we can support the physiological processes that contribute to fruit development and quality.

Our approach is to match the potassium source to the crop need. Potassium Carbonate 29.9% provides a concentrated liquid potassium option; Potassium Thiosulphate contributes potassium and sulphur through fertigation; and KMB takes a biological route by helping mobilise potassium already present in the soil.

Improving Fruit Shine and Appearance

Fruit appearance can directly influence marketability. In bananas, a healthy, uniform peel colour and attractive appearance are important for fresh markets and retail supply chains.

We therefore treat potassium management as one component of a complete quality programme. Adequate potassium supports plant physiological processes associated with fruit development, while the final appearance of fruit is also influenced by variety, maturity at harvest, irrigation, temperature, plant health and post-harvest handling.

Our focus is not to promise that potassium alone will create shine. Instead, we aim to maintain balanced nutrition so that the plant has access to potassium when it is needed for healthy fruit development.

Potassium and Banana Shelf Life

Banana shelf life matters because fruit is often harvested before full ripening and then moves through transport, storage and retail before reaching the consumer.

Good crop nutrition can support the plant’s overall physiological condition, but shelf life is also strongly influenced by harvest maturity, handling, temperature and storage. We therefore treat post-harvest practices as an essential part of the quality equation.

Our potassium-management approach is aimed at producing healthy, well-developed fruit. Keeping potassium available through the crop cycle can support this objective, while careful harvesting, transportation and storage protect the quality achieved in the field.

Liquid Potassium and Stress Management

Banana can face drought, salinity, temperature fluctuations and other environmental stresses. Because potassium is involved in water regulation and cellular processes, maintaining adequate potassium nutrition is relevant to plant performance under changing conditions.

Our Potassium Thiosulphate is positioned to support crop tolerance to drought and other stress conditions, while KMB supports a biological approach to potassium availability. These inputs should always be combined with appropriate irrigation, drainage and soil-water management.

No fertiliser can compensate for severe or prolonged water stress on its own. We therefore recommend treating potassium nutrition, irrigation and root-zone management as interconnected parts of the production programme.

Potassium Mobilising Bacteria: Making Soil Potassium More Available

A significant portion of soil potassium can occur in mineral forms that are difficult for plant roots to access. This is where Potassium Mobilising Bacteria can complement direct potassium fertilisation.

Our liquid KMB contains potassium-mobilising bacteria that help mobilise certain insoluble forms of potassium, potentially increasing the pool available to plants. We see this as a biological route to improving potassium availability rather than directly supplying soluble potassium.

Our KMB can be used across fruits, vegetables, spices, orchards and horticultural crops. Product-specific application methods include soil application, drip irrigation, root dipping and foliar spray, subject to the product label and crop recommendation.

For banana, we can position KMB within a stage-specific programme where soil potassium availability is a constraint. This complements direct potassium sources such as Potassium Carbonate 29.9% and Potassium Thiosulphate rather than replacing them automatically.

Combining Potassium with Balanced Nutrition

Potassium works best when it is managed alongside the rest of the nutrient programme. Nitrogen supports vegetative growth, phosphorus contributes to root development and energy-transfer processes, and micronutrients such as zinc and boron have important roles in plant development and reproductive processes.

Our Bio NPK provides a biological approach to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium availability, while our Zinc Solubilising Bacteria (ZSB) is designed to make insoluble zinc more available to plants. Where appropriate, these products can complement potassium management based on soil and crop assessment.

Our broader principle is simple: balanced nutrition supports better nutrient-use efficiency than focusing on potassium in isolation. We therefore encourage growers to look at the whole crop, not just a single nutrient.

Managing Potassium at Different Banana Growth Stages

We recommend planning banana nutrition around the crop’s changing requirements rather than treating potassium as a one-time application.

1. Plantation and Establishment

During establishment, our priority is healthy root development and vigorous plant growth. Soil preparation, organic matter and balanced basal nutrition provide the foundation, while products such as PROM and Muladhar Mycorrhiza can be included where suitable.

2. Vegetative Growth

During the long vegetative phase, the plant develops the canopy required for later bunch development. Our programme can include Bio NPK and appropriate potassium inputs during this phase, based on the crop and soil requirement.

3. Flowering and Bunch Formation

Flowering marks a major transition towards fruit production. This is where maintaining adequate and available potassium becomes particularly important. We can use Narmada NewTrient Potassium Carbonate 29.9% through the recommended foliar or fertigation route, with the post-bunch-formation window receiving particular attention.

4. Fruit Development

During fruit development, our focus shifts towards fruit filling, size and quality. We maintain potassium availability according to soil-test results and crop requirements, and we can continue the planned Potassium Carbonate 29.9% applications within the prescribed 2–3 application cycle.

Best Practices for Using Liquid Potassium

To make potassium management more effective, we recommend that growers:

Test the soil and irrigation water where appropriate, and assess the crop’s nutritional status rather than relying only on visual symptoms.

Match potassium application to crop demand and growth stage.

Use Potassium Carbonate 29.9% at 3 ml per litre for foliar spray and 2 litres per acre through drip/fertigation, repeating 2–3 times during the crop cycle, especially after bunch formation.

Use Potassium Thiosulphate only through fertigation, not as a foliar spray.

Consider KMB where soil potassium availability is a constraint, and integrate potassium with nitrogen, phosphorus and micronutrient management.

Maintain appropriate irrigation and drainage, and manage harvesting and post-harvest conditions carefully to protect fruit quality and shelf life.

Building Better Banana Production Through Efficient Potassium Management

At Narmada Bio-Chem, we believe that the value of potassium lies in making it available at the right time and in the right form. For growers targeting better bunch development, fruit size, appearance, taste and keeping quality, potassium management has to work alongside nitrogen, phosphorus, micronutrients, irrigation, soil health and post-harvest care.

Our Narmada NewTrient Potassium Carbonate 29.9% is the key liquid potassium solution highlighted in this programme, with foliar and fertigation application routes designed around crop needs. We also retain Potassium Thiosulphate as a fertigation-focused potassium-and-sulphur option and KMB as a biological approach to mobilising soil potassium.

We do not see the goal as applying more potassium simply for the sake of it. Our objective is to improve potassium availability when the banana plant needs it, maintain nutritional balance and support efficient crop development through the important stages of the crop cycle.

When supported by soil testing, appropriate irrigation, good agronomic practices and careful post-harvest management, our liquid potassium solutions and potassium-mobilising technologies can form a practical part of a modern banana nutrition programme.

Banana is grown for both yield and market value.
